Production

When Kevin Sullivan wascommissioned by CBC, PBS and The Disney Channel to create a sequel hestarted by combining many different elements of Montgomery’s threelater books: Anne of Avonlea (1909), Anne of theIsland (1915), and Anne of Windy Poplars (1936) intoa cohesive screen story. Sullivan invented his own plotline relyingon several of Montgomery’s episodic storylines spread across thethree sequels, He also looked at numerous other nineteenth centuryfemale authors for inspiration in fleshing out the screenstory.

The film succeeded in re-popularizing Megan Follows and ColleenDewhurst in their original roles. Sullivan also cast Britishveteran actress and Oscar winner, Wendy Hiller, in the role of theimpossible Mrs. Harris, a character Sullivan specifically inventedfor the storyline.

In Canada, the film became the highest rated drama to air onnetwork television in Canadian broadcasting history. This Sequelbecame known as Anne of Green Gables – The Sequel whenshown around the world and as Anne of Avonlea – the ContinuingStory of Anne of Green Gables when it premiered on The Disney Channel.
